This image captures the seed of a movement—from affirmation to action—rooted in resilience and innovation, inspiring all to nurture enduring change.

Tuesday, June 17, 2025— Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1994, Desertification and Drought Day raises global awareness about drought, land degradation, and the urgent need for sustainable land stewardship. This year’s theme, “Restore the land. Unlock the opportunities,” is more than a tagline—it's a challenge to us all. Restoring degraded lands unlocks food security, economic stability, and hope, particularly for vulnerable communities on the front lines of climate change.

At Impact Sierra Leone, that vision is deeply rooted in our work. Our logo—a vibrant tree sheltering tender seedlings—symbolizes sustainability and protection. Our motto, “Planting Seeds of Hope,” reflects what we do every day: supporting and nurturing communities through agricultural &empowerment training, water access, and long-term resilience.

The Reality on the Ground

The urgency of our mission is reinforced by the numbers:

- 86% of Sierra Leone’s population is exposed to drought and other climate-related threats (UN Sierra Leone, 2023).

- Since 1960, average temperatures have risen by 0.8°C, with projections reaching 2.6°C by the 2060s (World Bank, 2021).

- *Erratic rainfall patterns are making it harder for farmers to predict planting and harvesting seasons (USAID, 2022).

- Yet, only 12% of Sierra Leone’s climate finance involves the private sector, highlighting a major gap in resources (UNDP, 2023).

These challenges are not abstract—they directly affect food security, livelihoods, and the ability of rural communities like Foindu Village to thrive.

Our Mission in Action

Foindu is more than a focal point, it is a model for what’s possible. There, Impact Sierra Leone offers climate-smart farming training, distributes drought-resistant seeds, supports women-led agricultural initiatives, and promotes practices that preserve soil health and water access.

We are restoring land. But we’re also restoring dignity, purpose, and opportunity.

Land sustains life, and the time to protect it is now. As climate stress rises, so too must our collective action. At Impact Sierra Leone, we believe that every seed planted is a spark of resilience, and every empowered farmer is a force for change.

Let’s restore the land. Let’s unlock opportunities. Let’s keep planting seeds of hope.
