Celebrating leadership and impact — Dr. Adama Kalokoh, CEO & Executive Director of Impact Sierra Leone, receiving the Honorary Community Award on behalf of the organization.
Some moments remind you why the work matters. Moments when a room full of extraordinary people — people who have carried the spirit of a nation across oceans — pauses to say: we see you, and what you are doing is making a difference.
On Saturday, April 25, 2026, Impact Sierra Leone (ISL) experienced one of those moments.
At the 5th Annual Sierra Leone Independence Masquerade Ball in Bowie, Maryland — part of the landmark Sierra Leone @ 65: "1961: The Year of Freedom" celebration held at the Hi-Qu Event Center in Bowie, Maryland — Impact Sierra Leone was honored with a Community Impact Award in recognition of its unwavering commitment to empowering people, generating opportunity, and building sustainable futures in Sierra Leone.
A Night Born of Unity and Purpose
The evening was more than a gala. It was a gathering of excellence — a convergence of Sierra Leonean leaders, professionals, creatives, diplomats, and diaspora changemakers who came together not just to celebrate 65 years of independence, but to affirm that the journey of freedom is far from over.
Organized by MousaiK & Co., Inc. in collaboration with the Lek U Culture Association, the evening was a masterclass in cultural pride and community power. Guests arrived in stunning outfits and many adorned in green, white, and blue — the colors of Sierra Leone — gracing the red carpet in grand style before an unforgettable night of performances, networking, and recognition.
The night was guided with supreme hosting by MCs Sweet Emerson and Miss Egla. Cultural performances by Lek U Culture – Stickman International and the Askante Dance Troupe — including the soul-stirring sounds of Temne music — brought the heritage alive. The legendary Manzu Avec C-Bolt performed his classic hits, and unity artist Arqane (also known as Tycoon) from Jamaica kept the energy soaring. Kudos to the amazing DJ Moe for keeping the vibes alive all night long. Guests were treated to delicious Sierra Leonean cuisine, making it a full sensory celebration of heritage, a red carpet where everyone showed off their green, white and blue in grand style, and a special touch — every guest received a Sierra Leonean flag. Watching those flags wave in the air during the national anthem was nothing short of powerful. It almost felt like an African fashion show. A beautiful night of culture, elegance, unity, and celebration.
It was such an honor for His Excellency Ambassador Amara Sowa to be present throughout the entire weekend of celebrations — a powerful symbol of unity between our government, our Embassy, and the diaspora community.
Guest speaker Mr. Daramy Kabba urged Sierra Leoneans to invest in the Sierra Leone film industry as a vehicle for sharing powerful stories with the world — a call that resonated deeply with ISL's own belief in the transformative power of storytelling.

Impact Sierra Leone: Recognized Among Remarkable Women
ISL was honored alongside few other extraordinary honorees: Dr. Linda Muckson Sesay with Community Health Foundation Inc., Mariama Massaquoi-Gartmann, and Tenki for Born — women whose dedication to community has left indelible marks across the Sierra Leonean landscape
Leading ISL on this historic night was its Founder and Executive Director, Dr. Adama Kalokoh, accompanied by ISL team members Emmanuel Messali and Fatmata Bah — a reminder that Impact Sierra Leone's work is never a solo endeavor, but a collective heartbeat.
"This recognition is not just for Impact Sierra Leone — it belongs to every woman we have walked alongside in Foindu Village, every young person whose future we are building, and every partner and supporter who believed in this mission before it was visible. To be honored among such excellence is a reminder that purpose, when pursued with integrity, speaks for itself." — Dr. Adama Kalokoh, Founder & Executive Director, Impact Sierra Leone
Why This Recognition Matters
The nomination letter from MousaiK & Co. described ISL's work as a reflection of "the ongoing journey of independence” - addressing poverty and resource deprivation through education, agriculture, and waste management initiatives that empower communities and create pathways for sustainable growth.
That description is not just accurate. It is the daily reality of ISL's programs in Foindu Village:
🌱 Seeds of Life — nurturing food security through sustainable agriculture
👩🏾🌾 Women's Agribusiness Collective & Voices of Hope — elevating women as economic leaders
🧱 Buy a Brick / Vocational Skills Training Center (VSTC) — building infrastructure for skills, livelihoods, and opportunity
📦 Barrels of Hope — connecting diaspora generosity to grassroots need
🌍 F.A.R.M.S. — monthly outreach that sustains Foindu community year-round
Each program is a thread in a larger tapestry of transformation — and this award is a recognition of that entire body of work.
The Weekend That Preceded the Gala
The celebration began the night before, with the Embassy Movie Premiere Networking Reception at the Sierra Leone Embassy in Washington, D.C. — a private meet-and-greet and premiere of "Sierra Leone @65: A Journey Through Time." This movie premiere took us on a cultural journey over the years through the stories and interviews of key community figures. The movie was produced by Kidafan Coltd and led by Dr. Isatu Kakay-Diallo. ISL team was honored to network with Embassy staff, including H.E Ambassador Amara Sowa. It’s always important to include our government officials, especially our Embassy, in the diaspora as part of this vision of unity.
Leaders, creatives, diplomats, entrepreneurs, and changemakers came together around culture, storytelling, and social impact. For ISL, it was an evening of invaluable connection — new conversations sparked, partnerships seeded, and the reaffirmation that diaspora engagement is not a peripheral strategy; it is a core driver of change.
What Comes Next
ISL does not pause at milestones — we build through them.
As we carry this recognition forward, we remain anchored in purpose: expanding our programs in our partner community, Foindu Village, strengthening our diaspora partnerships, advancing the construction of the Impact Vocational Skills Training Center, and continuing to amplify the stories of the communities we serve.
"We look forward to building even stronger partnerships that create lasting impact across Sierra Leone and the global diaspora community."
To every donor, volunteer, partner, board member, and community champion who has walked this journey with us — this award is yours too.
